Mycenae

This is one of the important archeological sites of Greece. In the second millennium, BC Mycenae was one of the major centers of Greek civilization, a military stronghold that dominated much of southern Greece. The period of Greek history from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is called Mycenaean in reference to Mycenae.

The site has been well-preserved, and you can admire there the massive ruins of the cyclopean walls and the palaces on the acropolis. From the hill on which the palace was located, one can see across the Argolid plain to the Saronic Gulf. Be sure to see the Citadel, the Lions Gate, Grave Circle A and the Treasury of Atreus (Tomb of Agamemnon).  Many of the findings are now displayed in the Archeological Museum of Athens, but you can still see some items in the Museum there.

The site can be very hot in the summer, so don’t forget the water and good shoes.
You can combine it with the visit of other sites in the Peloponnese: Canal of Corinth, Epidavros, and Nafplio. Don’t forget to take a kosher lunch bag from Gostijo for a perfect experience!

How to get there?

The easiest is to get there by rented car or taxi, the ride is about one hour and a half. Take the highway E94 in direction of Corinthos, then Tripoli. Take the Nemea exit, where you will join the old Corinth-Argos highway, which has a clearly marked turnoff for Mycenae.

The intercity bus KTEL from Athens goes out from Kifissou Station (100 Kifissou Blvd), from central Athens. To get there, take a taxi (see taxi tips) or take the metro until the station Metaxourgheio (red line) and from there the bus 051 in direction of Kiffissos Station (make sure you are in the right direction). The station is the last stop, about 20 minutes ride.
