Nafplio

Nafplio, which was the first capital of Greece for 9 years after the independence, is a lovely city, with its picturesque pedestrians streets in the lace of the old town, charming neo classical mansions, shops, coffees and tavernas and spectacular views of the sea. Take a boat to cross to the Bourtzi, a fortified islet in the bay of Nafplio, climb to the fortifications of the Acronafplio and admire the beautiful view of the city below and the sea beyond, and finally visit the fortress of Palamidi  with its legendary 999 steps (there are only about 800, but it’s still impressive) and the place where Kolokotroni, a hero of the Greek revolution was imprisoned. There are also 2 very nice museums to visit: the Komoboloi Museum  presents an extended collection of beads and amulets from different periods and countries, while the Peloponnesian Folklore foundation showcases a very rich collection of traditional costumes and furniture.

Nafplio can occupy you for an entire day, but you can also choose to combine it with one of the sites of the Peloponnese, Epidaurus or Mycenae. It is a good idea to stop on the way there to admire the spectacular canal of Corinthos, which is on the way and does not take too long to see.

How to get there?

The easiest is to get there by rented car or taxi, the ride is a little less than 2 hours. Take the highway E94 in direction of Corinthos, then in direction of Tripoli. Take exit 6 towards Nafplio and then follow the signs.

The intercity bus KTEL from Athens goes out from Kifissou Station (100, Kifissou Blvd), from central Athens. To get there, take a taxi (see taxi tips) or take the metro until the station Metaxourgheio (red line) and from there the bus 051 in direction of Kiffissos Station (make sure you are in the right direction). The station is the last one, about 20 minutes ride.
