Piraeus Port

The most important thing to do in Pireas is to take a ferry to the Greek Islands. Still the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean offers attractions on its own: Besides seeing the impressive ballet of the huge ships in the central port, take a stroll in the picturesque Marina Zeus (also known as Passalimani) and admire some fantastic yachts moored there in the marina, which is one of the largest in Europe. There are lots of restaurants, shops, and taverns along the shore; if you like boat-watching, sit outside a café and watch the activity in the beautiful harbor. A little further is the Mikrolimano, a picturesque harbor with traditional fish taverns along with luxury restaurants and coffee shops. It is usually crowded with locals, especially during the summer nights. Also, you should not miss the nearby lovely neighborhood of Kastella: climb the hill (also known as Profitis Ilias) Hill to get the spectacular view of the sea and the traditional Greek houses built there; they look like they’re about to fall into the sea. There are many restaurants, cafeneons, ice cream shops, coffeehouses, and bars to refresh you.

If you go to Pireas with the train (green line), you can also visit The Athens-Pireaus Electric Railways Museum I, a small museum dedicated to the railway and the way it changed the life of the people in the Athens region. Entrance is free, and it will not take you too long to survey the old pictures and uniforms, signs etc.

Tip: You can combine an outing to Pireas with the visit of the Averof Battleship and the area of Paleo Faliro.

How to get there?

The green line will get you to the central port of Pireas. There you can take a taxi (see taxi tips) to Marina Zeus (less than 5 minutes) or walk about 20 minutes. Mikrolimani is another 20 minutes walk away. From there you are right below the Kastella hill.
